Replication is process of copying data from one data location to another, often used to facilitate data protection or migration projects. Replication can detect and duplicate data periodically or continuously in order to create a copy of the data in another location. Unlock a typical file copy a user might perform, replication usually spans large data sets or encompasses entire workloads like VMs and includes metadata about the workload. Replication typically is done on a large scale moving large amounts of data either for a specific one-time move of the data or on an ongoing basis to maintain an up-to-date copy of a data set in a secondary location for recovery or data distribution.
